Battery Diviner

Use the past to predict the future!

First Run

Upon first starting the app, one of three things will happen:

  • If this is the first time you've installed any version, a welcome message and instructions to come back later. See below for more details about why the app won't tell you anything yet.
  • If you've just upgraded from V1 to V2, a message about importing your old data. This will happen automatically, and should be pretty fast. Once complete, functionality will be automatically enabled.
  • If you've just bought the full V2 and had the free V2 installed, you should see a message about your data being imported. Once complete, functionality will be automatically enabled.

How the Battery Diviner works

The Battery Diviner keeps track of how intensely you drain your battery throughout the week and uses that information to predict future usage. This means it will learn things such as, you don't use your device very much at night, but use it pretty intensely during commutes to and from work or school.

These predictions may seem a bit odd initially, because it takes a good week or two for them to settle. Until that time, the Battery Diviner attempts to fill in the gaps using data from other days, so it stays useable.

Additionally, it keeps track of how long it takes to charge the battery. During that time period, it will slowly "forget" what your usage is like, eventually falling back to always using information from other days during that time.

Home

The contents on the main Home activity should mostly be pretty easy to understand: Current status, predictions, and a small graph of recent and future activity.

From here you can see all three predictions available. Using the current time and current percent:

  • How long until the battery is completely empty if you don't charge at all.
  • If you start charging by USB right now, how long it will take to reach the highest recorded value.
  • If you start charging by AC right now, how long it will take to reach the highest recorded value.

While the discharging prediction is based on daily usage, and can easily be predicted all the way down to 0%, the two charging predictions have a bit different nuance, and so won't predict all the way up to 100% unless that has been seen at least once in the past.

For example, my own phone charges on USB in a straight line all the way to 100%, but on AC once it passes 90% it slows down. Your device may have a different pattern.

Below these predictions is the summary graph. It shows from the beginning of the last day you stopped charging the device, to the end of the day it would reach 0%. By dragging left/right you can see more, or by dragging up/down you can zoom. More importantly, by tapping this summary graph you switch to a larger view with more information.
